eyondism seeks to outline the Development of the Ego in eight psychosocial stages of the life cycle. At each evolutionary stage, the Ego develops certain strengths — basic virtues — that enable forward movement, laying the basis for ethical rules grounded in ideals we strive toward. These stages do not follow a strict chronological framework; each child has her or his own timetable. As in foetal development, each aspect of psychosocial development has a critical period of readiness: if it does not flourish, it is likely to flounder. The stages progress in a cumulative rather than linear fashion — the behaviour of one stage does not dissolve with the arrival of the next. Maternal emotional state is critical to the subsequent stability of the child's future Life, as hormones under stress pass through the placenta, shaping the very architecture of the emerging soul. The African Renaissance grounds this understanding in the wisdom of Ubuntu: I am because we are — the individual soul actualises not in isolation but in sacred communion with community, ancestors, and cosmos.
